Admission requirements & process
Everything an Indian student needs to apply to Bulgaria - requirements, documents and the step-by-step process, in one place.
Strong academic record
Class 12 (10+2) with Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Bulgaria expects a solid science foundation - universities generally look for around 65%+ in Biology & Chemistry, and stronger marks help you clear the entrance exam. This is a serious, rigorous EU medical degree - not an easy back-door.
NEET qualification
You must have qualified NEET-UG. While many Bulgaria universities don't use NEET for selection, India's NMC requires it for you to be eligible to practise in India after graduating - so we treat it as essential.
Age
You should be at least 17 years old by 31 December of the year of admission. There is no strict upper age limit at most universities, though earlier is better.
English proficiency
The programme is taught entirely in English. IELTS/TOEFL is usually not mandatory for Indian students, but a few universities may ask for it or conduct a short interview to confirm fluency.
Selection & entrance exam
Most Bulgarian universities require an entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry, conducted in English (some also hold an interview), usually around early September. We confirm each university's exact method before you apply.
Medical fitness
A basic medical fitness certificate (including standard tests such as HIV) is typically required to confirm you're fit to begin the programme.
Financial proof
For the student visa you'll usually need proof of funds - typically a bank statement and a sponsorship affidavit showing you can cover tuition and living costs.
When to start your Bulgaria application
Applications open long before classes begin. Here's the timeline counting back from the September-October intake - so you know exactly when to start.
- 12-18 months before
Start in Class 12: apply, then confirm on results
You can begin while still studying Class 12. Finish your boards with Physics, Chemistry & Biology and clear NEET-UG (required for India). Many universities accept an early application on your Class 11 / predicted marks and issue a conditional offer - your seat is confirmed once your Class 12 and NEET results are out.
- 9-12 months before
Shortlist & verify universities
We match you to English-medium universities that fit your budget and profile, with a written check on recognition and your India pathway. Begin collecting and attesting your documents.
- 6-9 months before
Apply (and prep any entrance exam)
Submit your applications. Where a university selects by an entrance exam, register early and prepare, as exam dates are fixed.
- 4-6 months before
Get your Letter of Acceptance
Once selected, pay the first-year tuition and receive your official Letter of Acceptance from the university.
- 2-3 months before
Apply for your student visa
Lodge your long-stay study visa with proof of funds. This can take several weeks, so don't leave it late.
- 1 month before
Travel & accommodation
Book flights and student housing, arrange insurance, and complete your pre-departure checklist.
- Intake - Sept/Oct
Enrol & begin your 6-year degree
Register at the university, obtain your residence permit, and start your journey to becoming a doctor.
This is a typical timeline for the autumn (September-October) intake - the key takeaway is to start about a year ahead. Exact dates depend on the university and any entrance exam, which we confirm with a dated plan for your shortlist.
NMC compliance for Bulgaria
Under India's NMC FMGL 2021 rules, your degree must meet specific conditions to let you practise in India. Bulgaria's 6-year EU programmes are built to satisfy them - but each university must still be verified individually.
NEET qualified first - clear NEET-UG before enrolling abroad to remain eligible to practise in India.
54+ months of study - Bulgaria's 6-year programmes comfortably exceed the minimum required.
12-month internship, same university - completed at the same institution, never split across countries.
English-medium throughout - the full programme is taught in English, as required.
Local licence parity - graduates are eligible to practise in Bulgaria, as its own citizens are.
FMGE / NExT on return - pass the screening exam and complete CRMI to register with the NMC in India.
Quality of medical education in Bulgaria
Medicine in Bulgaria is a rigorous, EU-standard degree - not a shortcut. Here's what underpins its quality.
EU-standardised curriculum
Programmes follow the EU's Bologna framework and Directive 2005/36/EC for medical training, so the 6-year structure and competencies match those across Europe.
Strong clinical training
Universities like Plovdiv teach in a 2,000-bed university hospital, with early hands-on clinical exposure through to the final internship year.
Internationally recognised
Degrees are listed in the WHO/WDOMS directory and recognised across the EU; graduates can pursue licensing in India (NMC), the UK (GMC/PLAB) and the US (USMLE).
Established institutions
These are long-standing public universities - Medical University of Sofia dates to 1917 - with experienced faculty and decades of training international students.
English-medium, globally mixed
You study alongside a diverse international cohort in English, with the same examinations and standards applied to local and international students alike.
Outcome-focused
The degree is designed to produce practising doctors - strong fundamentals, clinical reasoning and exam preparation that supports FMGE/NExT and other licensing routes.
Career & employment opportunities
A medical degree from Bulgaria opens doors in India and across the world. Your path depends on where you choose to practise.
Practise in India
Clear the FMGE/NExT screening exam and complete CRMI internship to register with the NMC and practise across India.
Work across the EU
As an EU-recognised degree, graduates can seek licensing and employment as doctors throughout the European Union.
UK, US & beyond
Progress to the UK (GMC/PLAB), the US (USMLE) or other countries by sitting the relevant licensing examinations.
PG & specialisation
Pursue postgraduate residency and specialisation in India, Europe or elsewhere after completing your MD.
One degree, many directions
The bars show the breadth of paths a recognised EU degree keeps open - not guaranteed outcomes. Where you land depends on the licensing exams you sit and the effort you put in. We help you plan the route that fits your goals.
An honest word on outcomes: a degree opens the door, but practising anywhere requires passing that country's licensing exam (FMGE/NExT for India). We help you choose universities with a track record of preparing students well - but your results depend on your own effort. We never promise guaranteed jobs or exam passes.
Postgraduate options after medicine in Bulgaria
A medical degree from Bulgaria is where specialising begins. After you graduate and register as a doctor, these are the realistic postgraduate routes - honestly ranked by how most Indian students actually proceed.
PG in India (NEET-PG)
The most common route. After clearing FMGE/NExT, finishing your internship and registering with the NMC, you sit NEET-PG (moving to NExT) for an MD/MS or diploma specialisation in India.
Specialist training in Bulgaria / the EU
As an EU-recognised graduate you can apply for residency in Bulgaria or elsewhere in the EU - but be realistic: it's competitive, usually conducted in the national language, and EU citizens often have priority.
UK - royal college route
Sit the UK royal college exams (MRCP, MRCS or MRCGP) and enter NHS specialty training - a well-trodden path for English-taught graduates.
US - residency (USMLE)
Clear the USMLE steps and gain ECFMG certification to apply for a US residency in your chosen specialty.
Reality check: outside the UK/US exam routes, specialist training in Europe is usually in the local language and prioritises EU citizens - so for most students, PG back in India via NEET-PG is the main plan. We map the realistic route for you, without overpromising.

Yes. Degrees from NMC-recognised Bulgarian universities are valid in India. As with any foreign medical graduate, you must clear the FMGE/NExT screening exam and complete the required internship (CRMI) to register and practise.
Yes - this is a key feature of Bulgaria. Most universities require an entrance exam in Biology and Chemistry (in English), usually around early September, and some also hold an interview. We prepare you for the specific format of your chosen universities.
Tuition is roughly โฌ7,000-โฌ10,000/year (โฌ42,000-โฌ60,000 for the full six years) plus โฌ300-โฌ450/month living costs - Bulgaria has some of the lowest living costs in the EU, and the total stays far below an Indian private medical seat.
Yes - the full 6-year medicine programme is taught in English at the universities we list. You'll also learn Bulgarian alongside, mainly for communicating with patients during clinical rotations.
Yes. While Bulgaria's own admission is based on its entrance exam, under NMC FMGL 2021 rules you must qualify NEET before enrolling abroad to remain eligible to practise in India later - so we treat it as essential.
Yes - and you should start during Class 12. You can research, shortlist universities and prepare your documents, and many universities accept an application based on your Class 11 or predicted Class 12 marks and issue a conditional (provisional) offer. Your admission is only finalised once you pass Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry & Biology and qualify NEET-UG (required by India's NMC) - that is when you receive the unconditional Letter of Acceptance, pay the first-year tuition and apply for your student visa.
Yes. The most common route for Indian students is to return and sit NEET-PG for an MD/MS specialisation in India (after FMGE/NExT and NMC/DCI registration). You can also pursue specialist training in Bulgaria or the EU - though outside English-speaking systems this is usually in the local language and competitive for non-EU graduates - or take the UK royal-college or US USMLE routes. We help you plan a realistic PG pathway, honestly.
Honestly, mostly no - genuine scholarships for non-EU students on European medical degrees are limited, and we won't pretend otherwise. The notable exception is Hungary's Stipendium Hungaricum, a competitive government scholarship (India is a partner country) that can cover tuition, accommodation and a stipend for Medicine. A few universities also offer partial, merit-based fee discounts. For most families the practical route is an Indian education loan - we help you plan the funding honestly, with no false promises.
